HAF at the Herbert | Summer Activities

HAF is the Holiday and Activities Food Programme, from Coventry City Council.

HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) is a national programme funed by the Department for Education and helps children and young people gain free access to activities and experiences over the school holidays.

If your child receives free school meals and lives in Coventry, they should be eligible.

HAF Masterclass: Capturing JOY! - A photography workshop with Mandip Singh Seehra

Tuesday 23 July | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this photography workshop lead by photographer Mandip Singh Seehra, and inspired by our JOY exhibition. Young artists will learn how to use different photography techniques to create photos that exude joy.  

As part of this workshop, all participating children will receive lunch, served from our museum café, Baxter’s. Please let any food allergies be known at the time of booking. Parents are not required to stay for the duration of this workshop, but are welcome too, should they wish to.

 

HAF Masterclass: Media Madness – Explore artmaking through a range of different media. 

Wednesday 24 July | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Spend the morning making prints using Lego, and mono print techniques. Then, in the afternoon you’ll try out a variety of mark making media. Use your studies to create a piece of abstract artwork which will become the cover of a handmade pocket sketchbook.  

Finish the day by making some beautiful bug collages in your new pocket sketchbook.

As part of this workshop, all participating children will receive lunch, served from our museum café, Baxter’s. Please let any food allergies be known at the time of booking. Parents are not required to stay for the duration of this workshop, but are welcome too, should they wish to.

 

HAF Masterclass: Neo Folk Bandanas and Bowls - A Folk Art Inspired Workshop  

Tuesday 30 July | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Start the day by creating your own visual library of plants and bugs inspired by our Collecting Coventry exhibition. Then, create a printed bandana and clay coil bowl inspired by patterns and shapes found in nature and techniques used in traditional folk art. 

As part of this workshop, all participating children will receive lunch, served from our museum café, Baxter’s. Please let any food allergies be known at the time of booking. Parents are not required to stay for the duration of this workshop, but are welcome too, should they wish to.

 

HAF Masterclass: Nature Illuminated – An Illuminated Sculpture Workshop with Graham Fudger  

Wednesday 31 July | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Start the day playing with symmetry by illustrating nature inspired motifs. Then, explore colour and light by making illuminated sculptures with artist Graham Fudger. Finish the day by stepping outside to play with patterns in nature using photography.

HAF Masterclass: Scentscapes - A Scented Painting Workshop with Gemma Costin  

Tuesday 6 August | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this scented painting workshop lead by artist Gemma Costin and inspired by our JOY exhibition. Referencing real insects from our collection, and plants from our community garden, you’ll create a painting that smells as beautiful as it looks!

HAF Masterclass: Mythical Medieval Mask Making - A Mask Making Workshop Inspired by Medieval Creatures Real and Imagined  

Wednesday 7 August | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this mask making workshop inspired by medieval animals, both mythical and real found at the Herbert and St Mary’s Guildhall. Bring your mask to life by using cardboard constructions techniques to make it 3D.

HAF Masterclass: BIG flowers - A Sculpture Workshop with Julia Snowdin  

Tuesday 13 August | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this sculpture workshop lead by artist Julia Snowdin, and inspired by our JOY exhibition. Use paint, ping pong balls and corrugated plastic sheets to create large flower sculptures for installation in the museum.

HAF Masterclass: Joyful Creatures - A Narrative Movement Workshop with Highly Sprung 

Wednesday 14 August | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this movement workshop lead by Emily Robertson of Highly Sprung and inspired by our JOY and Collecting Coventry exhibitions.

HAF Masterclass: Paper plant Sculptures - A Paper Sculpture Workshop with Clare Pentlow 

Tuesday 20 August | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this paper sculpture workshop lead by artist Clare Pentlow, and inspired by our JOY exhibition. Take inspiration from our garden, and collection and learn different paper cutting techniques to make sculptures of them.

HAF Masterclass: Tactile Poems - A Textile and Poetry Workshop with Michala Gyetvai 

Wednesday 21 August | 10am – 3.30pm | For Ages 11-16

Take part in this textile and poetry workshop lead by artist Michala Gyetvai, and inspired by our JOY exhibition. Use pencils, pastels and needle felting to illustrate a found poem made from exhibition copy.
