Microcommission celebrating contribution of East African migrants to Coventry unveiled
04 February 2025
Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of its latest microcommission, Journeys Within, by local artist Jamie Shufflebotham.
The exhibition, which opened in January 2025, offers a thoughtful and moving exploration of the lives of East African migrants who have made Coventry their home.
The project focuses on the personal stories of these individuals, highlighting their resilience, ambitions, and the challenges they have faced. Through a mix of visual and narrative elements, Journeys Within captures the complexities of their experiences, from the hardships of migration to the joy of building new communities in Coventry, a city known for its welcoming spirit and reputation as a city of sanctuary.
Shufflebotham’s work celebrates the entrepreneurial achievements of East African migrants, showcasing the businesses they have established and the cultural richness they bring to the city. At the same time, the exhibition does not shy away from addressing the difficulties they have encountered, including the failures of international organisations like the United Nations in supporting migrants adequately.
The artist also aims to challenge negative stereotypes often perpetuated by the media. By presenting these stories in a nuanced and humanising way, Journeys Within encourages visitors to reflect on the contributions of migrant communities and to foster greater empathy and understanding.
Kerrie Suteu, Head of Creative Media at the Herbert Art Gallery, said: "Jamie Shufflebotham’s Journeys Within is a powerful and timely exhibition that brings to light the often-overlooked stories of East African migrants in Coventry. It’s a testament to their strength, resilience, and the vital role they play in shaping our city’s identity. We’re proud to showcase this work as part of our commitment to celebrating diversity and promoting understanding."
The microcommission is part of the Herbert Art Gallery’s ongoing commitment to showcasing diverse voices and stories that resonate with Coventry’s identity as a City of Sanctuary. Journeys Within is open to the public now, offering a poignant and educational experience for all who visit. It can also be watched online here: https://culturespacecoventry.com/micro-commissions
