Rugby jersey from region's first LGBT rugby club goes on display in Collecting Coventry exhibition

The Collecting Coventry exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum has unveiled a new addition to its Human History timeline section - a rugby shirt from Coventry Corsairs, the region’s first and only LGBT-inclusive rugby club.

The shirt, donated by the club, highlights the Corsairs’ mission to promote inclusivity in sport. Established in 2019, the club plays in the International Gay Rugby (IGR) League and provides a welcoming environment for players and supporters of all backgrounds.

James Clarke, chairperson of Coventry Corsairs, said: “We’re thrilled to be part of the Collecting Coventry exhibition, especially as we’ve just celebrated five years as Coventry and Warwickshire’s first and only LGBT-inclusive rugby club.

“Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment where everyone can enjoy and play rugby - regardless of gender, sexuality, or sporting experience.

“This exhibition encapsulates Coventry’s incredible diversity, and we’re proud to contribute one of our playing shirts to highlight the inclusive spirit of our city. If you’re interested in rugby or want to join us socially, visit our website or get in touch with us on social media.”

The Collecting Coventry exhibition explores the history of collections managed by Culture Coventry Trust and features thousands of objects that tell the city’s stories.

Ali Wells, curator at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, said: “The Coventry Corsairs rugby shirt is a fantastic addition to the Human History timeline. It represents not just the club’s achievements but also the progress Coventry has made in fostering inclusivity and diversity. We hope this addition inspires visitors to celebrate the unique communities that make our city so vibrant.”

The exhibition runs until 27 April 2025 and is free to visit. To learn more about Coventry Corsairs, visit their website at www.coventrycorsairs.com.
