The conservators’ role is to understand, protect and revitalise the physical aspects of an object. This may involve preserving/researching evidence from dirt or damage, sympathetic cleaning, and repair, mounting for display or handling, and creating supporting storage solutions, amongst other things. Methods differ depending on the materials, condition and sometimes display context. We also monitor environmental conditions in stores and display areas and make recommendations and adjustments where necessary.
You are welcome to come in to watch conservation processes taking place and ask questions about your own conservation projects. Please note, we ask visitors not to bring their own items with them.
