GRAIN Photographers' Talks Programme - Guy Martin

Guy Martin graduated with a first class BA (Hons) in Documentary Photography from the University of Wales, Newport.

From January 2011 he began to document the revolutions sweeping through the Middle East and North Africa. In 2012 his work from Egypt and Libya formed the basis for joint exhibitions at the Spanish Cultural Centre in New York, HOST Gallery in London, the Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff and the SIDE Gallery in Newcastle.

His work appears in the Guardian, Observer, Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph, D Magazine, FADER Magazine, Huck Magazine, Le Monde M Magazine, Time Magazine, Bloomberg Business Week Magazine, The New York Times, WIRED, Harpers and National Geographic.

From 2012 to 2017 he was based in Istanbul Turkey, where he produced a new long-term project on the rise of Turkish soft power and the complex new identities in the Turkish Republic. The first part of this project City of Dreams, received much critical acclaim in 2014 and 2015, inc. The Project Launch Award at CENTER, Santa Fe, New Mexico, a grant from the St. Breiuc festival, and support from the Magnum Emergency Fund.

Select group international exhibitions for his work in Turkey have been shown at the Zagreb International Photography Festival, Umbria World Photography Festival, headline show at the Gazebook Photo Festival Sicily, the Istanbul International Photo Festival and PhotoVille NY.

In 2017 he was the winner of the Viewbook Transformations Grant that is helping to put ‘The Parallel State’ online in a new digital platform. This project had its first major installation at Recontres Arles as part of the New Discovery Prize. 'The Parallel State' will be published by GOST in spring 2018.
