City Archives

Our archives contain the records of Coventry City Council. We have a superb collection of medieval manuscripts, with the earliest a charter dated 1182. Other highlights include royal letters from Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn and King Richard III, and a Leet Book which has records of the business of the city in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Other highlights include the city’s papers relating to the Second World War, plans for the city’s post war development, historic building plans for commercial and domestic premises, and workhouse records. Non-council collections include records of numerous local charities, businesses and non-conformist records. Our business records include those relating to Daimler, Rootes, Armstrong Siddeley, and Rolls Royce.

These documents can be consulted by prior appointment in the Research Room.
